DiscountClick.com System Overview
Below is a general overview of Advertising Terms and Basic Concents for DiscountClick.Com Control Panel and Internet advertising in general.

Ads: There are 3 types of internet advertisements:
  • Banner advertisements, image/graphical advertisements both large and small.
  • Text link advertisements, advertisements in plain text.
  • Rich Media advertisements, interactive advertisements which may contact a combination of the 2 above, plus additonal html, html forms, java applets, etc.

The Discountclick.com systems fully support the basic 3 types of internet advertisements.
When you click on the Ads link in the control panel, you will be able to create new banner, text, or richmedia ad serving records and edit or delete existing records as well. After you create advertising records you can insert appropriate html into your web pages, the ads we'll be served up and tracked.
Ads are typically served up to web browser, however ads can be serve and track email advertisements as well by embedding the html or text hyperlinks in your email newsletters.

Discountclick also features support for serving ads from third party ad servers as well.
Groups: Groups are created by you the systems administrator to place advertisements into. An ad can belong to one group, or can belong to mutliple groups. Important: Each group should have at least 1 Default Ad. A default ad is served up if other ads have maxxed their daily impression limits.
  • Each group should have at least 1 default ad.
  • There must be at least one group created (all ads maybe placed into it if desired).
  • Only one banner per group can be displayed at anyone time on a page. For example if you want to server 2 typical large banners on the page example top & bottom, each would need a unique groupname for the top and bottom areas.
  • The group 'clickthru' is a special group used for Text Ads Only. Do not place graphic or rich media ads in the clickthru group!
As an example of groups and the purpose of them, say on your website, on your main page, you want certain advertisements to be featured and rotated on the main page. A customer may pay extra to have their advertisements featured on the main page.
You could create a group called "firstpage" and place certain advertisements in the group "firstpage" . In the html in your page youll code: group=firstpage as part of the ad serving syntax. (the html generator will generate sample tags)

This is Discountclick.com's main form of 'targetting'. Targetting is serving up the best ad, to produce the best response. Ad selection is narrowed down to a specific grouping. This form is the least intrusive to the visitor, protecting their privacy.

Other more expensive services typically have vast databases of information on visitors personal interests and habits that they use to help target advertisements. Visitors are often spooked by advertisements that know such intimate details about them and invading their privacy. This type of intrusive targetting has recently lead to lawsuits against other more expensive service providers including their customers!
Campaigns: Campaigns are customers accounts. With Discountclick.com services you can create customer accounts and track statistics for your customers. Additionally your customers can login and check reports & stats on how their advertisements are doing on your site. A campaign may consist of one ad, or many ads.

Once you create a customer account, you'll have to notify them of their ID and password. A customer can be setup to receive email reports as well on the status of their campaign.
Reports: Reports generate statistics in html or exportable spreadsheet (csv format) that analyze the daily & summary statistical performance of individual ads, group, or campaigns. There are both internal publisher reports for the administrator's usage, and there are campaign reports for your customers to view.
Based on reports you can determine the effectiveness of the advertisements being served and make decisions on rotation and groupings. In the Reports area, you select the criteria by which you want to analyze the data, either by group, campaign and date ranges as well.
Customers can view their reports by logining via the campaign login link on the main entry page of discountclick.com.
HTML Tags: The HTML tags area is designed to assist you in generating the necessary html tags to place into your web site. You decide the type of ad you wish to create, text link, or graphic/rich media and the grouping. There are 2 basic methods for serving ads SSI (which refers to server side include), or Non-SSI, serving up the image directly to the page. SSI method is required to serve up Richmedia type advertisements.
